A survey on mental health in countries and territories across Asia

With mental health at the forefront of conversations across Asia, CNA commissioned a survey across 6 countries and territories on the issues that impact mental health most, as well as the stigma and support surrounding those grappling with these issues.


Here are some of the key insights.

What are the top issues important to you in determining your mental health?

Across all countries and territories, 45% indicated that their mental health has deteriorated as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic

Significantly more respondents from Hong Kong (61%) mentioned that their mental health has deteriorated, relative to other countries and territories


In South Korea (39%), Singapore (38%) and Indonesia (36%), fewer indicated that their mental health has deteriorated

Among those who mentioned that their mental health has deteriorated, public restrictions including mask-wearing and travel (62%) and constrained social interactions (62%) emerged as the top causes across all countries and territories.

Across all countries and territories, 43% rated their access to public mental health services as adequate

Significantly more respondents from Singapore rated their access to public mental health services as good or excellent (38%) relative to other countries and territories


Overall, respondents would like to see more public mental health services such as workplace health and wellness initiatives (48%) and psychiatric/sociological/therapist services (48%)

Significantly more respondents from Indonesia would like to see more public mental health services, such as easier access to medications (57%) and telephone and online health services (55%)

Across all countries and territories, 36% felt that mental health awareness is improving while 32% felt that it is increasing but still falls short.

Significantly more respondents from Japan indicated that mental health awareness in their country is increasing, but still falls short (44%) relative to other countries and territories

Across all countries and territories, 51% are concerned (somewhat concerned or extremely concerned) about the stigma around mental health, while 49% of respondents are indifferent about it (not all concerned, somewhat not concerned, or neither)

Significantly more respondents from Singapore are concerned (66%) about the stigma around mental health, relative to other countries and territories

In Hong Kong, more respondents are indifferent about it (65%), compared to elsewhere
